I’ve been playing a lot of the demo recently, and have come to the conclusion that the Left 4 Dead 2 characters are actually the people from Scrubs, just out killing zombies.

I was recently at a zombie walk in Toronto on September 12, celebrating George Romero’s officially being a Canadian citizen. After the walk, there was a screening of Night of the Living Dead, and later that night, his new movie Survival of the Dead was shown. All in all, the day (and night) was spectacular! Fun! That’s what this weekend was.

I was there all 3 days – and all for free. I volunteered for 2 short nights (Friday & Saturday) at a D&D info table – basically, soliciting random people to play D&D and other roleplaying games.

I dressed up in the usual Commander Keen costume, and this time a lot of people tried out my pogo stick, and I even made an entire video for it!

Last night I saw 500 Days of Summer.
It was actually a really good movie. More about that in a bit, though. I love me some Zooey Deschanel. :3

This is taken directly from an email sent to a friend after the fact. I hope that’s okay, because I’m too lazy to reword it into something else…

So, what happened after the movie was what made my night interesting. So here I am walking home alone from the theater, and suddenly I have 2 black guys in a row hitting on me. The second guy was pretty lulzy and creepy, the line of the night being “Have you ever had a black man before?”. >_> haha… then I was almost home and passing O’Grady’s on College St. and some guy runs over ACROSS THE STREET from the patio and says “Hey, what’s your name?” and he tells me to come over there with him. I’m just all awkward and say “Sorry, no, I’m heading home for the night.” and he replies as I’m walking away with, “What if I’m the man of your life?”

… erm. It was just really weird to me. I almost wanted to feel flattered but then I remember – drunks, Caribana, hitting on every girl they see, that’s all it is. :< blarg.

It made me all depressed and stuff, so I went exploring around some buildings and stuff and there was no one out and the night felt so good. I cried a bit. It was relieving, I felt content. There was a building that had a water-stream thingy that I just stood there watching it for a while. It was nice. I walked the rest of the way home without incidents except some teenagers getting out of a taxi and yelling obscenities all over the place.

Odd.

I had told this story to a friend of mine, and apparently there was just something that night that felt wistful. But yeah, wistful is a good word. I was definitely feeling that after the movie. Honestly, the movie had me thinking a lot, and for a long time, afterwards. There were parts about it that made me depressed, parts that made me hopeful, and sad. I was definitely thinking about it while I was crying. It was a relief though, to cry like that. And as I walked home I was balancing on the concrete blocks and jumping from block to block, and little kiddie things like that and it might have looked cute and odd. Haha I love shit like that.

Anyway, the title of this entry is a lyric from a song called “Hero” by Regina Spektor that was used in 500 Days of Summer. I haven’t had a movie affect me emotionally for some time (usually it’s kid movies like Wall-E or Up), but this one got me. God, I’m such a girl sometimes.

I went to Toronto’s version of Comic Con last month.  It was free to get in, so I figured I might as well check it out.
It was small as expected, all held in one huge room, so it was basically a lot of comic book and toy vendors set up, and with a small Artist’s Alley kind of thing, where artists sold and/or commissioned artwork.

I decided to recycle my Commander Keen costume and pogo-sticked around the place a bit… I’ve gotten waaaay better at pogo sticking, by the way. 90 jumps in a row is my newest record!

So I’ve finally gotten around to playing the Silent Hill games for the first time. I kind of missed out on them when they came out due to not having a PS2 and stuff, so I’ve decided to brush up on the entire series from the beginning and it’s been epic thus far.

In the past while, I’ve beaten the first one on PS1, and the second one on PS2. I’m moving onto the 3rd one now as well. Man, I’ve been playing these non-stop and naturally it’s given me some strange dreams, especially with the appearance of Pyramid Head in the second instalment.

Excellent series from what I’ve played so far. Both have great storylines, the first one has more interesting and interactive puzzles, though. The second one seemed to get under my skin a lot more, and seemed more “psychologically” disturbing (oh my god the moaning sounds above you in the prison as you run through cells is … disarming. Supposedly Pyramid Head is up there moping away, but that’s only a theory. AND there’s no way to get up there in the first place). I also liked reading up on all the symbolism of the characters and all the different possible endings after finishing the game. Gotta love the UFO ending! Best ever. I think I got into the second one more for the story, though, as the characters were believable and the acting was a lot less cheesy than the first.

Apparently I really need to play Dead Space now.

Man!

You know, I pride myself on having this cool, calm and collected robotic exterior, but all that broke down while watching this film. It’s the one movie I’ve seen in years to have simultaneously made me feel tragic hopelessness for the human race and then amazing hope for love and life (doesn’t that sound so cliche?) … I definitely teared up more than once.  I mean, his feeble attempts to hold EVE’s hand? Ohmygod, so cutesie.  I wanted to bawl (or at least, cry silently) when EVE was looking through her security videos and she sees how determined he was waiting for her, unflinching as he shields her from the rain, and all the other little things that had gone on while she was “off”.

And, oh my Jesus monkeys.

The part where EVE attempts to fix Wall-E at the end, putting a new chip in him, new eye parts … and then he WORKS but his entire memory is GONE, and he just flat-out ignores this wonderful, caring android who has such fond memories of HIM – that was just so beautiful and so moving.  The way it builds up their entire “relationship” and love for one another is so powerful that this scene could have made me into a quivering mess if I weren’t sitting right next to my mom in the theater.

Seriously, though. GREAT movie.

It can be said that some of the deepest and most powerful things can be done through actions alone – and this movie is testament to this.  There is rarely any verbal communication between Wall-E and EVE, besides warbling out eachother’s names and some other bits that are clearly human language but not essential to the story.  It’s just amazing how so much can be felt when so little is said.

So yeah, Wall-E was an amazing movie.  I’m just glad I went when there weren’t a ton of little kids asking “why’d he do that? What’s that? Is that a space ship, mommy?” because, well, kids.

On another note, I saw the new Batman movie, the Dark Knight.
And… I honestly didn’t find it all that amazing.
I mean, it was decent, though Batman sounded like Duke Nukem with a deeper voice so… who can take that shit seriously? The Joker was awesome though. There was SO much hype around it what with Heath Ledger’s death, and I think he really shined in this final role.  Best portrayal of the Joker, really.  Some parts were just downright creepy, and I enjoyed the cynicism of the character.

A few days ago, the Spore Creature Creator trial version leaked.
Since then, I’ve bought the full creator for 10 bucks and have been having some fun!

Here’s a few of the things I’ve made so far, with a download to the .png file if you want to play around with it too! (just drag the .png file into your Creature Creator – unfortunately, you may need the full version for it to load up some of my newer ones!)

Mudkip was one of the first things I made, because I herd u liek sum things. I sure do! It took a fair bit of tweaking, but I got it to look how I wanted, and tried to make the colours match up completely with the actual Pokémon. Here’s a video of it dancing!

So, as you can see I’ve been having fun!
I was surprised at how many DOS-related characters were already up on the Sporepedia (basically, you can choose to share your creatures once you’ve made them, and it’s a huge gallery of what other users have made). I found a Cosmo from Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure and ended up making my own too. This is such a neat program, and the full game will be awesome!
